It isn’t Spring but I feel the need to purge. New Years Resolution #1 is to simplify, be more mindful and create more space. For me, head space and physical space are intrinsically connected. When my life is cluttered, so are my thoughts, I’m less organized and tend to stress more easily. I’ve been reading “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” for inspiration and so far, I’m loving the message: keep what brings you joy. Is it that simple?
Mission #1 is to create a beautiful closet of items I WANT to wear, that I feel GOOD in and that are VERSATILE. I’ve neglected myself since having kids and my style has paid the price, partly because I’m not earning the income I once did, partly because I have other (little) people to dress now and partly because my body feels different than it once did, which means starting over completely. I need a closet that works together and a wardrobe that makes me happy.
Here’s how I’m going to do it:
- EMPTY THE CLOSET, all the clothes onto the bed.
- SORT - LOVE / MAYBE / NO / SEASONAL
- SORT AGAIN - THE MAYBE PILE - Ask yourself “does this bring me joy? When was the last time I wore this?”
- DONATE/SELL what’s left.
Betsy from MINDFUL STYLE asks her clients “would you buy this item today?”
Streamlining your existing wardrobe is the first step. Then assess what is left and what is needed. Buy well-made, classic clothing that can be mixed and matched.
Carolyn Rector from un-fancy wears a 37-piece capsule wardrobe, on a 3-month rotation. She uses the “3 of each” rule (one casual, one statement and one in-between) i.e.: 3 pairs of flats, 3 pairs of heels, 3 pairs of boots, 3 pairs of jeans, 3 pairs of shorts, 3 skirts, 3 sweaters, 3 button-ups, 3 t-shirts, 3 tanks, 3 vests, this leaves room for 4 jackets or dresses depending on the season.
Now, I may never get this specific with my wardrobe because, to be honest, I don’t have much time to think about it, but I will declutter, streamline, define my “style” and only purchase well-made clothing that I feel GREAT wearing.
Once the closet is purged to perfection… onto… everything else!
